Va+: ISSUE #005 Victory and Artistic Production

Background

In 2016, voters headed to the polls to elect a new president in the United States, and to decide on whether to withdraw from the European Union in the United Kingdom. Amid this climate of rising populism—also described as the defeat of liberalism—what does “victory” mean to you and me? What images does it call to mind?

The theme “Victory and Artistic Productions” seeks to question why we can paradoxically evoke “defeat” by flaunting a “victory,” and to interrogate the very dichotomy of “victory versus defeat.” For instance, Japan’s End of War Memorial Day is known in other countries as Liberation Day or V-J Day—the significance behind the event, as well as the date, vary across territories. This is an example of how, in one sense, victory is the culmination of the rightness of a certain society and ideology, while in another sense it creates losers, and so can lead to circumstances in which the weak, the poor, and other such problems are neglected.

And because people do not perceive this today, the same is perhaps true of the liberalism embraced by the arts, or the rightness and fairness inherent in political correctness. Victory as we define it entails a defeated party; to defeat another is to make a loser of them. It is precisely because we sense this contradiction that we now try instead to distract ourselves from the blindness that comes with “victory,” and from our own sense of unease.

How can artistic productions help us to confront “victory,” the “defeat” that it paradoxically creates, and the very dichotomy between the two? Of course, our choice is not simply between winning and losing: we also have the option to “break free” from the usual conflicts and clashes. Perhaps we can think of “better living,” of changing our attitude in society and refusing to be overwhelmed by the everyday troubles of real life, in terms of removing ourselves from the very dichotomy of “victory versus defeat.” Now, what do we mean by removing ourselves? Can we really break free from this dichotomy by engaging in lifehack-style behavior? Is it possible to search for an alternative without submitting to our existing value system, thus coming up with a new praxis of victory?

The question of what makes for a “victory” obliges us to reconsider our own values. From this standpoint, contemplating the future of both victory and defeat can surely serve a way to study the changes of the present. This is the premise behind this issue.
